Finally it's here, April 25, the 2015 trout season begins!
All rivers are available to fly fishing. Favorite spots that have been untouched for 7 months should have trout not yet educated by kayakers, canoeists, and other anglers.
The Steelhead are just arriving in the deep parts of the river and the Browns are with them. Brook Trout are not yet looking up waiting on the first good hatch and warmer water. So it's streamers and nymphs for a few more weeks.
This is a time I always enjoy. Rivers are quiet if you stay away from black top roads. Your ability to recognize good trout holds should get you some nice trout. Casting accuracy and the right fly delivered to a feeding station is the recipe for great day.
This weeks rain will raise river levels giving the trout the advantage but a wet Spring will play into an entire season of good water levels. The rivers...Maple, Black, Sturgeon...are at the top of their banks, and tannin. However the Pigeon River is suffering from the dam removal with muddied water. The MiDNR reports it should clear by late May.
Have all your fly selections in your vest and renew that fishing license for 2015. The opener this weekend is going to be sunny but cool. The scent of the rivers and forest are there. It' s been another tough winter here in the North...time for a trip to your favorite river.
