Steelhead Cold

Temperatures reached the 50s F this past weekend, so what's a guide to do? How about search for spawning Steelhead Trout. With outdoor warm temperatures and the sun out, fellow river rats Jim T, The Koz, and I floated the Jordan River. It is early, but the weather was nice.
The mid-state rivers are in full swing, but what is the Steelhead situation in Charlevoix and Emmet county? The Jordan, Boyne, Bear Rivers are harboring those spawning trout. The big Rainbows are in the river. Not a lot, but as soon as this record breaking cold snow storm passes their numbers will begin to grow along with we fly fishing anglers who chase them. Waiting out these cold days is an easy choice, I just do not want to be the person in the hospital emergency room for frost bite in late April.
I guess I will spend this weekend searching for my Easter basket, and prepare for a river attack this up coming week. Normally in 4 weeks, about mid May, the leaves are on the trees and you've cut the grass at least once. I'm hate to say it...the local news has pointed it out for us...the most brutal winter ever in northern Michigan. I know spring does exist, I have warm past memories of fishing this time of year. Hey Mother Nature, let's create new memories with some nice weather, please!
