Outdoor Parade

Is it October already? For me this month is a favorite, it is the only time of the year I enjoy riding in my car. Balmy weather & fall colors are a soothing mix. The fauna is active. Deer are running, elk are bugling, salmon are spawning, the birds are migrating, outdoor life is a parade. It is that time of year people seem to be more relaxed. They travel through the north in a slow peaceful manor enjoying those sights they sped by last summer. Fall is a melancholy event.
With October come different fishing rules. Many trout rivers are closed.  The fishing rules are very complicated. Check your MiDNR "Michigan Fishing Guide" for rules and regulations. Some rivers close, but have open sections for fly fishing listed as gear restricted (GR).
The weather remains comfortable. October is our wettest month, however the rains have come in the middle of the night with the days sunny. Later this week the forecast has rain predicted. Temperatures remain near 70 F. The fish are moving out into the middle of rivers and dry flies are working on Brook Trout. Streamers are the rule for salmon...it is big fish time of the year. Your waders are still warm enough for this time of the year...but neoprene waders or warm base layers are only 3 weeks away.
