Northern Michigan Trout on Dry Flies - Part 3

The indigenous Brook trout...my favorite, rarely will beat me. They hit with a slash not as obvious as the Rainbow, but much more obvious than the Brown. The bigger Brook trout will range from 8-14 inches. Their slash and kick will reveal their size. I have developed my hold of the fly line with just enough pressure to insure any large trout will pull it through my fingers before it breaks. I do not use the reel. Knowing how much pressure the fish exerts gives away his size. Lightly tugging your line will confuse him. This causes him to change directions. Once he is mid stream you fight him based on the leaders strength til he wears out. Remember if you hold your line taut a large trout will break off on his first kick. That's why I don't use the reel. The reel doesn't know the fishes size where my hand does.
In passing many top dog fly fishing experts develop personal techniques over time. So when you fish with a guide ask him fish a few holes...watch closely, there is a lot to learn. I always am thrilled to see a professional do his thing, thus I am still learning new tricks.
