Not only are the trees bursting forth in beautiful colors, so are the Brookies. This is their time of year to spawn and the changes in the males are dramatic. Colors darken and become more intense. Their jaw / mouth extends and becomes dark. At this time of year it is easy to tell the boys from the girls. Colors are everywhere around you and at the end of your tight line. What a great time of year to fly fish.
The rivers are still low but with all this rain we will see them coming back and the salmon on their up stream runs. This year we have seen a slow start to the salmon run but next week we should see the run in earnest. As the rivers have been low the fishing remained spotty, however some sections of all the rivers have been good.
The Brookies will take about any fly now and the flies we have highlighted over the past few weeks will all work. So get out and spend some time on your favorite river.
