What beautiful weather this past week. A gift to say the least. Warm balmy days in the 80s Fahrenheit. What a dilemma, ride my motorcycle or fly fish . So I did both. The brook trout in the 12" plus are still refusing the fly. I call it " One & Done ". They roll on my dry fly, never touch it and you never see them again. I found this scenario on the Maple river, so I tried the Black river. Wow, my sister and I put in at 2PM. In less than 4 hours we hooked 60 Brook Trout and landed 44. All 5-9 inches, no whoppers.
That's a good afternoon. But still the 4 year old breeders were " One & Done ". My guess is the spawn is held up by too warm of weather. Yes it's the sun that dictates most of natures behavior, but hot weather also plays a roll. The weather has returned to a North West wind bring our upper Lake Michigan temperatures to a more seasonable clime. I am hoping the afternoon porpoise takes of the larger Brook trout will begin. The take season is coming to a close October 1st, but year 'round stretches, catch and release, are still available to Flyfisherman If the warm weather pattern persist . The Pigeon, Sturgeon, Black and Maple rivers are in very good shape. However the added rain is helpful to the King salmon who will be moving into the streams this week.
Fall colors, comfortable sunny days.... It's a very meloncoly time of year for me knowing 35 degrees below zero temperatures are just around the corner.
It's all here...let's enjoy this peaceful time of the year.
